Convict Caught With Loaded 'Ghost Gun' During Stop In St. Mary's County: Sheriff

A routine traffic stop in Great Mills led to the discovery of a loaded ghost gun and the arrest of a convicted felon, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies pulled over a white 2011 Kia Forte on Great Mills Road on Monday, March 10, after noticing it was operating without brake lights, officials said.

During the stop, deputies identified 20-year-old Pernell Maddox, a passenger with no fixed address who is known to law enforcement. 

A search of Maddox led to the discovery of a loaded, unserialized Polymer 80 9mm handgun hidden in his waistband, police said.

Maddox was arrested and charged with multiple firearm-related offenses, including:

  • Possession of a regulated firearm after a disqualifying conviction;
  • Two counts of wearing a loaded handgun in a vehicle on public roads;
  • Two counts of wearing a loaded handgun on his person;
  • Possession of an unserialized firearm;
  • Possession of a regulated firearm while under 21;
  • Possession of ammunition while prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Maddox was booked at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he is being held without bond.
